Online Chess Clock — Free Timer for Chess & Board Games

Fischer, Bronstein and simple modes with bullet, blitz, rapid and classical presets

Turn any device into a professional chess clock: place your phone or tablet between the players, pick a time control and tap your side after each move. Choose a preset — bullet (1+0, 2+1), blitz (3+2, 5+0, 5+3), rapid (10+0, 15+10) or classical (30+0, 60+30) — or set custom minutes and increment. It supports Fischer increment, Bronstein delay and simple countdown, shows a move counter, warns you when time runs low, and works fullscreen with sound and vibration. It doubles as a chess timer or stopwatch, so you can run a plain count-up or count-down too. Free, no app and no sign-up — great for chess and equally handy for go, scrabble and other two-player board games.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fischer time control?

Fischer time control (also called increment) adds a fixed amount of time after each move. For example, in 5+3, each player starts with 5 minutes and gains 3 seconds after each move.

What is Bronstein time control?

Bronstein delay gives back the time you used for your move, up to the increment amount. If the increment is 5 seconds and you move in 3 seconds, you get 3 seconds back. If you take 10 seconds, you only get 5 back.

How do I start a game?

Select a preset time control or enter custom minutes and increment, then tap any clock to begin. The tapped player's opponent's clock will start running.

Can I pause the game?

Yes! Use the pause button in the center to stop both clocks. Press again to resume play.

What do the time formats mean?

Time formats like 5+3 mean 5 minutes initial time plus 3 seconds increment per move. Bullet is under 3 minutes, Blitz is 3-10 minutes, Rapid is 10-30 minutes, and Classical is over 30 minutes.

Can I use it for games other than chess?

Absolutely. It works for any two-player turn-based game — go, scrabble, backgammon, checkers or shogi. Pick the simple mode for a plain countdown, or keep increments if your game uses them.

Is the online chess clock free?

Yes — it's completely free, with no app to install and no sign-up. It runs right in your browser on phone, tablet and desktop, and works as a chess timer or stopwatch as well as a full chess clock.
