VAT Formulas

Adding VAT

To add VAT to a net amount:

  • VAT = Net × Rate
  • Gross = Net × (1 + Rate)
  • Example: 100 × 1.20 = 120 (20%)

Removing VAT

To separate VAT from a gross price:

  • Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate)
  • VAT = Gross − Net
  • Example: 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 (20%)

Standard Rates by Country

  • United Kingdom: 20% (reduced 5%)
  • Germany: 19% (reduced 7%)
  • France: 20% (reduced 10% / 5.5%)
  • Spain: 21% (reduced 10% / 4%)
  • Ireland: 23%
  • Türkiye: 20% (reduced 10% / 1%)

Common Mistake

Subtracting 20% from a gross price is WRONG.

  • Wrong: 120 − (120 × 20%) = 96
  • Right: 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100
  • VAT is ≈ 16.67% of the gross, not 20%

Frequently Asked Questions

How is VAT calculated?

To add VAT, multiply the amount by (1 + rate); for example, for 20% multiply by 1.20. To remove VAT from a gross price, divide the price by (1 + rate).

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Choose the 'Remove VAT' mode and enter the VAT-inclusive amount; the tool calculates the net (excluding VAT) amount and the VAT it contains. The formula is Net = Gross ÷ 1.20 for a 20% rate.

Why can't I just subtract 20% from the gross price?

Because VAT is added on top of the net amount, not on top of the gross. Subtracting 20% from 120 gives 96, which is wrong; the correct net is 100. VAT makes up about 16.67% of a 20%-inclusive gross price.

Which VAT rate should I use?

It depends on your country and product. The UK standard rate is 20% with a 5% reduced rate; Germany uses 19%, France 20%, Spain 21%. Use the preset buttons or type your own rate.

Can I enter a custom VAT rate?

Yes. Type any rate into the rate box next to the preset buttons and the result updates instantly — useful for 19%, 21%, 23% or any other rate.

Are the amounts I enter stored?

No. All calculations run in your browser; values are only kept locally on your device for convenience.
