Free Online Shot Timer

Train your draw, first shot and splits with a phone or laptop

A shot timer is the standard training tool in practical shooting sports such as IPSC, USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge and bullseye: after a start beep it measures how long it takes to fire the first shot and the time between every following shot (the “split”). This online version works directly in the browser. Press Start, wait for the beep – it comes after a random or fixed delay – and every shot the microphone hears is recorded with its time and split. A par time adds a second beep as a time limit for drills. The timer measures from the moment the microphone hears its own beep to the moment it hears each shot, so speaker and microphone latency cancel out. It also works for dry-fire practice (adjust the sensitivity so the click of the trigger is picked up), airsoft and any drill that reacts to a sound, such as a clap. Always follow the range rules and the four basic safety rules; live fire only at an approved range.

Shot Timer Guide

Terms

  • First shot: time from beep to first shot (includes the draw)
  • Split: time between two consecutive shots
  • Total: time of the last shot in the string
  • Par time: target time marked by a second beep
  • String: one run from beep to last shot

For reliable detection

  • Keep the phone within 1–3 m, volume up
  • No headphones or Bluetooth speakers (the mic must hear the beep)
  • Indoors: use the “Indoor” echo filter
  • Dry fire: raise sensitivity until clicks register
  • Watch the mic level bar cross the white threshold line

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an online shot timer work?

The page plays a start beep and listens with the microphone. Every sound above the threshold after the beep counts as a shot; the time from the beep to each shot is shown together with the splits.

How accurate is it?

Detection is sample-accurate inside the browser’s audio engine. Because both the beep and the shots are timed by the same microphone, speaker and microphone latency cancel out; typical accuracy is within about 0.01 s.

Can I use it for dry fire?

Yes. Increase the sensitivity until the click of the trigger reliably moves the level bar past the white line, then practise draws, reloads and transitions.

Why are extra shots counted indoors?

Echo from walls can be detected as a second shot. Choose the “Indoor” echo filter, which ignores sounds within 0.15 s of a shot, or lower the sensitivity.

What is a par time?

A par time is a target time. When it is set, a second, lower beep sounds at that moment; shots fired after it were too slow for the drill.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in modern mobile browsers. Allow microphone access, keep the screen on and do not use headphones, so the microphone hears the beep.
