Free Online Text to Speech

Listen to any text with the natural voices built into your device

This text to speech tool reads any text aloud using the Web Speech API built into modern browsers. Paste an article, an email, notes or a document of up to 5,000 characters, pick a voice and press Play. Voices for the page's language are listed first, and every voice installed on your device is available, so you can also listen to text in other languages. Adjust the speed from 0.5× to 2× and the pitch to taste, and pause, resume or stop at any time. Long texts are split into sentences so playback does not cut off. It is handy for proofreading, learning pronunciation, resting your eyes or making content more accessible. Voice quality depends on your system: Edge and Chrome offer extra natural online voices, and you can add voices in Windows, macOS, Android or iOS settings.

Getting the Best Voice

Where the voices come from

  • Windows: Settings → Time & language → Speech → Add voices
  • macOS / iOS: Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices (download enhanced voices)
  • Android: Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech output
  • Microsoft Edge adds natural “Online” neural voices automatically

Tips

  • 0.8–0.9× is comfortable for learning pronunciation
  • 1.2–1.5× is good for listening to long articles
  • Punctuation creates natural pauses — add commas where needed
  • Keep the tab in the foreground: some browsers stop speech in background tabs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this text to speech free?

Yes. It is completely free, needs no account and has no daily limit. Each session reads up to 5,000 characters; for longer documents, paste the next part when the first one ends.

Is my text sent anywhere?

Not to our servers. Speech is generated by the voices on your device. Note that some browsers (for example Chrome's “Google” voices and Edge's “Online” voices) use their vendor's cloud service to produce the audio.

Can I download the speech as an MP3?

Browsers do not let websites record the built-in speech engine directly, so the tool plays audio but cannot save a file. You can use your operating system's screen or audio recorder if you need a recording.

Why don't I see a voice for my language?

The list shows the voices installed on your device. Install additional voices in your system's speech settings, then reload the page.

Why does the voice sound robotic?

Older system voices are less natural. Try a voice labelled “Natural”, “Online”, “Enhanced” or “Google”, or use Microsoft Edge, which offers high-quality neural voices.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, on recent versions of Chrome for Android and Safari on iOS. On iPhone, make sure the silent switch is off and the media volume is up.
