Roman Numeral Converter: What Does MMXXVI Mean?

Type in one box — the tool detects whether it's a number or a numeral.

Roman numerals still surround us: clock faces, book volumes, movie sequels, tattoos and anniversaries. This converter works in both directions — type 2026 and you get MMXXVI; type MMXXVI and you get 2026. It automatically detects what you entered. Conversion covers every number from 1 to 3999 (the natural limit of the classical system), and any Roman numeral you enter is strictly validated against the writing rules: malformed spellings like IIII or VV are rejected. The reference section below lists the seven basic symbols, the subtraction rule and the most-searched examples — everything you need whether you're converting a birth year for a tattoo or solving 'what is XIV?' for homework.

Roman Numerals Guide

The seven symbols

  • I = 1 · V = 5 · X = 10
  • L = 50 · C = 100
  • D = 500 · M = 1000
  • A symbol repeats at most 3 times in a row

Subtraction rule & examples

  • A smaller symbol before a larger one subtracts: IV = 4, IX = 9
  • Only I, X, C subtract: XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900
  • 2026 = MMXXVI · 1990 = MCMXC
  • 3999 = MMMCMXCIX (largest classical numeral)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you read Roman numerals?

Left to right, adding values arranged from large to small (VIII = 5+3 = 8). When a smaller symbol precedes a larger one, subtract it: IX = 10−1 = 9. Example: MMXXVI = 1000+1000+10+10+5+1 = 2026.

Why does the converter stop at 3999?

In the classical system a symbol can repeat at most three times, so 4000 can't be written as MMMM. Romans drew a bar (vinculum) over symbols for thousands more — in modern use, 3999 is the practical ceiling.

Why is IIII rejected? I see it on clocks.

The standard rule writes 4 as IV. The IIII on clock faces is a historic convention kept for visual balance — known as the 'watchmaker's four' — and is invalid in standard writing.

How do you write zero in Roman numerals?

You can't — the Roman system has no symbol for zero. Medieval scribes occasionally wrote the word 'nulla', but that's a word, not a numeral.

How is 2026 written in Roman numerals?

MMXXVI: two thousand (MM) + twenty (XX) + six (VI). Year conversion is the most common use — your birth year works the same way.

Where are Roman numerals still used today?

Clock faces, book volumes and chapters, movie sequels (Rocky II), monarch names (Elizabeth II), Super Bowl and Olympic editions, building inscriptions and tattoos are the most common.
