Mic Test – Is Your Microphone Working?
Live level meter, waveform, recording and playback

Online Microphone Test
Check your mic in seconds — before a call, stream or recording
Press Start, allow microphone access and speak: the level meter, the live waveform (or frequency spectrum) and the status line show immediately whether your microphone picks up sound. If you have several microphones – laptop, webcam, headset, USB mic – choose one from the list to test each. Record 5 seconds and play it back to hear how you actually sound, which is the quickest way to spot a muffled, distant or distorted mic. The tool also shows the loudest peak in dBFS, the sample rate, number of channels and input latency. Processing such as noise suppression and automatic gain is switched off, so you see the raw signal. All audio stays in your browser and is never uploaded.

Microphone Troubleshooting
If nothing is detected
- Allow microphone access in the address bar (lock or camera icon)
- Pick the right device in the Microphone list
- Check the hardware mute switch on headsets
- Windows: Settings → Privacy → Microphone → allow desktop apps and browsers
- macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
Reading the level
- Normal speech at 30 cm: about −30 to −15 dB
- Peaks near 0 dBFS: too loud, may distort
- Below −50 dB while talking: too quiet or wrong mic
- Constant hiss above −60 dB in silence: noisy mic or gain too high
- Echo or distant sound: move closer, use a headset
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I test my microphone?
Press “Start mic test”, allow access and speak. If the level bar and waveform move and the status turns green, your microphone works. Record 5 seconds to hear the quality.
Why is my microphone not detected?
Usually the browser or operating system blocks access, the wrong input is selected or a headset mute switch is on. Allow the microphone in the address bar and system privacy settings, then choose the right device from the list.
Is my audio recorded or uploaded?
No. The sound is analysed in your browser. The optional 5-second recording is kept only in memory so you can play it back, and it is discarded when you leave the page.
What does dBFS mean?
Decibels relative to full scale: 0 dBFS is the loudest level a digital signal can reach, so all values are negative. Speech usually sits between −30 and −15 dBFS.
Can I test a headset or USB microphone?
Yes. Connect it, press Start and choose it in the Microphone list. Every input your browser can access is shown.
