How Much Should I Tip?

Tip, total and split per person — with rounding

Type the bill amount, pick a tip percentage and the calculator instantly shows the tip, the total and how much each person pays. Choose a common rate (5%, 10%, 15%, 18% or 20%) or enter any custom percentage. When you split the bill between several people, you can round each share or the total up to the next whole dollar so nobody has to deal with cents; the difference is added to the tip and the effective tip rate is shown. In the United States 18–20% is the usual tip at a sit-down restaurant, while in many European countries service is included and a small 5–10% tip or rounding up is customary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.20. For a $56 bill the tip is $11.20 and the total is $67.20. A quick trick: move the decimal point one place left (10%) and double it.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette guides in the US say tipping on the pre-tax amount is fine, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter whichever amount you prefer.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Enter the bill, choose the tip and set the number of people. The calculator divides the total including the tip equally and shows each person’s share.

What does rounding up do?

“Each person’s share” rounds every share up to the next whole unit; “The total” rounds the bill total up. The extra amount goes to the tip, and the effective tip rate shows the real percentage.

How much should I tip in the US?

18–20% at sit-down restaurants is standard today; 15% is the minimum for adequate service. Counter service and coffee shops are optional, often $1 or 10%.

Is service included in Europe?

In France, Spain and Italy service is included by law or custom, so a small tip for good service is optional. In Germany and Austria people usually round up or add 5–10%.
